Cambridge Publishing Celebrates Deirdre M. Delagera for Contributions to Animal Welfare
Deirdre M. Delagera is the visionary behind A Pet's Life - "no-kill" pet sanctuaries
LARGO, FL, April 9, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Deirdre M. Delagera, Owner of A Pet's Life, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in animal welfare and pet care.
A staunch advocate for animal rights, Deirdre M. Delagera has devoted her professional career to veterinary nursing, animal rescue and pet care. For over 12 years, she has served as a veterinary nurse in both emergency and general practices. This experience, she notes, has provided her with an insider's view of the results of increasing veterinary euthanasia due to today's rising cost of living and the declining American economy. Sadly, "economic euthanasia" has become all too commonplace in a country where unemployment rates are skyrocketing and economical limitations are forcing pet owners into a corner. Many individuals are facing foreclosure and bankruptcy—issues which compromise the ability to appropriately care for one's pets. In many instances, individuals have to euthanize their animals due to forcible change of residence or inability to find alternative care for their pets.
These sad realities motivated Ms. Delagera to establish A Pet's Life, "no-kill" pet sanctuaries. With the aim to eventually become a nationwide chain, the facilities will combine boarding, open and closed adoption, training and conventional pet care services with rescue and rehoming efforts. The sanctuaries will be available to all people, regardless of income and status. "We will base or fees on a sliding scale, so no one will ever again have to resort to euthanasia as their only option," states Ms. Delagera. A Pet's Life will welcome pets from owners who can no longer care for their animals and will ensure both temporary and future living arrangements at the facility or with adoptive "pet parents." Her future goals for the facilities include the installment of Skype and webcams for owners to visit virtually with their pets or, if they live nearby, to visit their pets as much as they like—an addition that Ms. Delagera maintains will alleviate abandonment issues.
Ms. Delagera is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in veterinary nursing at St. Petersburg College. She holds a certification in pet behavior therapy and is a professional affiliate with The Humane Society of the United States, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the World Wildlife Fund.
